Carbohydrates Are the Secret Stuff

A few weeks ago we highlighted the first of three macronutrients by discussing the importance of protein. However, Carbohydrates are equally important for athletes and here’s why:
They are the primary energy source for the body - Carbohydrates need to be consumed at every meal and especially before and after practice, training and games.
They are protein sparing - When protein is utilized as an energy source, it is then unable to fulfill its primary job of repairing and building muscle tissues. Carbohydrate consumption allows protein to play its proper role.
They help brain function - Carbs help maintain focus, decision-making and memory.
When carbs are broken down in our bodies, a simple sugar called glucose is formed and is used as energy to complete actions as complex as dunking a basketball or as simple as blinking your eyes.
It is painfully obvious when an athlete is not getting enough carbs. They usually feel flat, lack explosiveness and endurance and tend to underperform in training and games.
Ensure you are eating carbs at every meal and before activity to get the most out of your body. Examples of carbs include breads, fruits, yogurt, pasta, oatmeal, beans, and certain vegetables such as potatoes, corn, carrots and peas.
