Lift In-Season, Stay Strong
With most high school athletes participating in their sport(s) year round, strength training is a key element that often gets lost in the shuffle.
While I would never discourage a basketball player from playing, year-round strength training is essential to keep athletes resilient and developing physically.
And it doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple, well-structured program should get the job done.
Here’s what Santa Barbara High School varsity soccer athletes are doing in-season:
DB Stepup 3x5 each way
Vertical Jump 3x5
Physio Hamstring Curl 3x10
Inverted Row or Pull-Up 3x10 or 3x6
Push-Up to Downward Dog 3x10
5 exercises. 20 minutes. That’s it. Try to add weight session over session, but keep the total number of working sets low to avoid unnecessary fatigue.
Keep it simple. Stay strong.
