Road Warriors: Peak Performance for Away Games

Jack Anderson, MS, CSCS · February 17, 2025

We’re in the thick of club soccer season and that means:

  • Long road trips both flying and driving

  • Weekends with multiple games

  • And plenty of opportunities for poor sleep, nutrition and hydration

While road trips are challenging to performance, players who can maintain as much of their normal routine as possible tend to fare better.

Here’s what to focus on:

💧Drink water consistently throughout the trip and include electrolyte drinks especially before and during games.

🍝 Focus on carbs up to 24 hours before games. After games mix your carbs with protein for recovery.

😴 Sleep can be tricky with travel, but getting as close as you can to 8 hours per night will be a game-changer

🏃🏻Sitting in a car for hours means getting out during breaks to walk around and stretch. Doing a mobility routine in your hotel room before bed helps too.

While ticking all these boxes is sometimes impossible on the road, make an effort to complete at least some of them. It will make a huge difference!
